Frequently asked questions.

Do you take my insurance?

SóL Pelvic Wellness Studio is an out-of-network provider, meaning we do not take health insurance. Payment is due at the time of your appointments either by use of cash or card. If you do have health insurance, you can request a superbill for your visit which can be submitted to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. I highly recommend you reach out to your insurance company to understand your out-of-network benefits prior to scheduling your first visit to ensure no financial surprises arise.

Why is SóL Pelvic Wellness Studio out-of-network?

Being an out-of-network provider allows me to provide high quality, completely individualized care without the influence of insurance coverage. Because we are not restricted by insurance coverage, you have full control over your treatment duration, what treatment modalities can be utilized, no surprised bills or denied visits, and unlimited contact with me, your physical therapist. In the traditional insurance based model, the insurance company dictates how many PT sessions you are allowed and what treatment modalities they will cover. This can cause your care to be limited because of the insurance company! By seeing an out-of-network provider, you have unrestricted access to your healthcare provider between your visits. This model often results in improved patient outcomes and decreased visit requirements. If you would like to understand the benefits of out-of-network care, please reach out.

Do I need a prescription or referral from my doctor?

Massachusetts is a direct access state meaning patients are allowed to seek out physical therapy without needing to go through their doctor. If you are planning to get reimbursement through your insurance company, your insurance provider may require a physician’s referral. I recommend reaching out to the insurance company to ask about their specific requirements.

When can I start pelvic floor PT for my postpartum care?

You will have a 6-week follow up with your OBGYN or midwife to ensure proper healing and clear you to return to certain activities. Pelvic floor PTs are trained to also evaluate the healing and function of your muscles, meaning we can be an appropriate resource prior to your 6-week follow up. Often, pelvic floor changes can be treated more efficiently during the early phases of postpartum, so early evaluation can help decrease complications later on down the road. It is the standard of care in most countries that women have a pelvic floor PT included in their postpartum recovery. Here in the US, pelvic floor PTs are trying to advocate to improve the health of all of you!

Can I see you while I am pregnant?

Yes! There are so many benefits of seeing a pelvic floor physical therapist before, during, and after pregnancy. By addressing any pelvic floor dysfunction prior to labor, you can reduce the likelihood and severity of common delivery complications and postpartum symptoms. This can include perineal tearing, urinary incontinence and diastasis recti.

You can begin pelvic floor PT at any point in your pregnancy! We want to make sure you are adjusting to and addressing any pregnancy related changes that may arise and help prepare you for birth. Birth prep includes breathing mechanics, relaxation strategies, pelvic floor lengthening, birthing positions, pushing techniques, pelvic mobility, and more.

I will reach out to your doctor to ensure they are aware of and in agreement with our plan of care.

I have never been pregnant before…can I still see you?

Of course! Everything in our body is connected and pelvic floor PTs are specifically trained to take that into consideration and treat the whole body…not just the problem area. Plus, every single person on this planet has a pelvic floor.

Do you treat male pelvic floor conditions?

Currently, I only treat female pelvic floor conditions. Please feel free to reach out for recommendations if you are looking for someone that specializes in male pelvic floor disorders.

What does the first visit look like?

Your first visit will be about an hour and a half long. We will begin by reviewing all of your past medical history, discuss your current complaints and symptoms, determine your treatment goals, answer any and all questions that you have, and create your individualized plan of care. After the intake, there will be a physical exam to look at your mobility, strength, posture, and other measurements, so be sure to dress comfortably! Because pelvic floor PT involves the muscles of your “down there” there is the option to perform an internal vaginal or rectal assessment. All this is done at your discretion and consent but it does allow for a more in depth understanding of possible contributing factors of your complaints. When we meet, I will go over exactly what an internal exam will look like using a pelvis model and we can discuss if it seems like a good fit for your treatment plan. At the end of the session, we will review everything that I found and begin working on a few home exercises. This means that you will start healing your symptoms on the first day…how exciting!
